From narration to an animated life story
Produced by Ayni Studios, The Surgeon Who Crossed the Sea turns the surgeon’s voice narration into an animated life story, combining painted imagery and photographs.

The Surgeon Who Crossed the Sea tells a personal story through narration, painted imagery, and photographs. It follows Dr. Tuan T. Lam’s journey from leaving Vietnam as a child to his later life as a surgeon. The film’s published description identifies his own writing as the source of the story.
The production
Produced by Ayni Studios. We took the surgeon’s voice narration and turned it into an animation, using illustrated scenes and photographs to bring his life story to the screen.
The voice gives the film its narrative thread. Illustrated scenes give viewers a way to picture events from the past, while photographs connect the story with the people behind it. The source description distinguishes the imagined paintings from the real photographs at the end.
For clients, this offers a useful starting point: a recorded memory, interview, narration, or written life story. It can be especially helpful when the events happened long ago, contributors live in different places, or a new location shoot would not add much to the story.
With Ayni, the process begins by reviewing the story, audio, photographs, and intended audience. We agree the narrative structure and visual approach, develop the animated sequence, and refine the film through the review stages included in the scope.
Audio-led production can reduce the need for travel, location filming, and on-camera interviews. The animation style, running time, audio quality, and revisions still determine the work involved. This example shows a creative approach, not a published budget or turnaround benchmark.
The same approach can support a family history, founder biography, organizational milestone, or an interview-led impact story. We distinguish illustrative scenes from documentary evidence and agree how a person’s words and likeness will be used.
